Papel Picado

Tonight, the kids and Grammy and I all took BART into the Mission to participate in the festivities of Dia de los Muertos. The kids weren't scared of all of the walking skeletons (which seems to be an SF tradition- everyone dresses up their old fashioned finery, and paints their faces like skulls) and did well in the large crowd. We danced to drummers and salsa bands in the street, we watched the various dancers and performance artists mingling through the crowd of walking dead. We watched the Aztec dancers with their feathered costumes and took in the sights. We stopped to watch a man making papel picado, the same way it's been made forever- with sharp tools, a stack of tissue paper with a design on the back, and a little hammer. Zoe even helped take a crack at it.

It was interesting that a few days later when we went to my favorite food court in Berkeley, Zoe commented on the papel picado sheets decorating the Mexican place.
