Monterey Bay Aquarium

Today we drove down to Monterey to visit the aquarium. Otters, Sunfish and Jellies oh my! Zoe was in awe of the floor to ceiling view of the kelp bed with silvery fish. We saw birds, mammals and crustaceans. Most notable though, was that this was the first day that Zoe could not stay off her feet. She finally prefers walking to crawling, and had the best time deciding where SHE wanted to go. Mommy and Daddy tried to keep up, as best we could.

Lifeguard on Duty

No more Mark Twain summers for this family! No way! It's heating up here at the Oakland Ranch. Those swimming lessons are about to be put into practice.
For some reason, when I see Zoe like this, I can't help but think of her as Calvin, and Mr. Bear as Hobbs.

Fridge Farm

In the last couple of days, Zoe has been spending a lot of time on two feet. She stands, she walks, she spends less time crawling. I bought her a little magnetic toy that attaches to the refrigerator for toddlers who are starting to spend a lot of time standing up in the kitchen. It has the fronts and rears of 5 animals, and sings little songs when they are put together. It's great for when mommy is cooking or doing dishes. It keeps her interest away from the pan cabinet and the trash can. She spends a lot of time at the Fridge Farm these days. Did I mention that it sings hokey songs? Farmer in the Dell, Skip to my Lou and other banjo favorites. I'm about ready to pitch the thing out the window.

The Moon

Sometimes when Zoe is asleep, she yells out loud- I rush into her room to be sure her head hasn't gotten stuck between the bars of her crib, or that a monster isn't devouring her. Of course she seems fine, but her face wrinkles up, her eyes squint little tears, she stiffens and wails again. She screams the screams of sheer terror. Obviously, she's having a nightmare. I've come to wonder, what do babies have nightmares about? What fear incites these wicked, bone chilling shrieks?
How do babies develop such terrible fear when they've only been fed and cuddled and sheltered from hard lessons?
I don't know what gives Zoe such awful dreams, but I do know that she fears the sky and and things that move through it.
Zoe fears... the moon.
Just the mere mention of the word "moon" has been known to make her little face crinkle up into a pre-cry. In the evenings when we go for our walks and the forest is quiet, the light fading, Zoe avoids looking at the sky. She knows "it" hovers up there, waiting to catch her eye. At first I thought she would look up and squint at the light, but then I realized that she really is afraid of the moon. When I look up and point to it, call it out by name, she gets this worried, sad look, then she wimpers as she gazes fearfully at the glowing ball in the sky, then she buries her face in my hair and bear squeezes me. Then she'll check- "yes! It's still there! Staring at me!" Sometimes, she'll wimper and refuse to look up.
The other evening, we were at the park enjoying the last light at the end of our walk. Zoe was atop the slide, waiting to slip down when a plane came into view with a dull roar overhead. Shrieks, screams! Sheer terror! As if the Southwest Airliner was about to drop bombs on us. I began to wonder if she experienced the London raids of WWII in a past life. She flew down the slide into my waiting arms where she squeezed me tightly and cried into my shoulder. When she mustered up the courage to look up, the plane was gone, but the evil moon was still there and she dared not look skyward again.
Later at night, I told Nico about what happened. He said that he had noticed her fear of the sky and more notably the moon before too. As we talked, each time we spoke the word moon, Zoe looked out the window, upward and whimpered.
Now we try to show her throughout the day, "look, a plane!", "look, the moon", "look, the birdie in the sky". We try to tie the sky to fun things to learn about. What is it about a quiet moon, and empty sky that is so frightening? Is the moon's gaze too persistant? Is the endlessness of the sky too overwhelming?

Nanny Park

As kids, we all spent a lot of time on the playground. Making up scenarios of pirates and mud pie bakeries.
I remember the metallic, sooty smell left on my hands from swinging across the monkey bars and dropping to the asphalt. Cherry drops from the bars and around the world on the rings. The callouses on my palms were worn proudly like a badge of accomplishment. The playground was a proving ground where you met allies and avoided enemies. You never know who you'll meet.
Zoe is in need of a few playmates. She rarely gets to hang with folks her own age. I've been taking her to a kid's park up the hill lately, and it's fun to see her interact with her peers in the sandbox. She isn't super shy, and greets others with a smile and extended hand- whether that hand is to offer some sand or request your toy depends on her whim. Last week, Zoe was chillin in the sandbox, playing at a dollhouse that has been planted there. An older girl came romping over. She was probably 3 or 4. Little girls like to come over and visit Zoe, they seem to be attracted to babies in general. I was sitting a few feet away watching over the kids and parents milling about, watching Zoe as she greeted the little girl. My gaze wandered around and when I looked back, the two were facing each other, but Zoe was no longer smiling. The little girl was holding Zoe's pacifier having obviously just wrenched it from Zoe's lips, and a moment later, the little brat reached out with both hands in front of her and shoved Zoe, toppling her over backwards in the sand. Shocked, Zoe started to cry the silent cry that only means she is building up steam, getting angrier with every quiet second that passes. I snatched her binky back from the Brat and said "Where is your Mommy? You don't shove babies around, that's no way to behave!" Then a nanny came running over with an apologetic look, "did she push the baby? I'm so sorry!"
Obviously this has happened before.
"Tell the baby you're sorry", the Nanny demanded.
Silence.
"Tell the baby you're sorry".
Silence.
Not sorry one bit, little bully.
"Give the baby a hug-"
Great. The little bully gave shaken Zoe a brief and insincere squeeze, just scaring her a little bit more.
As the brat was pulled away, back toward the jungle gym with the bigger kids, I picked the leaves from Zoe's hair, replaced her binky and told her that some days you meet a new friend, and some days you get shoved over by the playground bullies. "This may have been the first time someone shoved you at the park, but unfortunately, it probably won't be the last. How you get by depends on how you handle yourself after."
Zoe toddled off, still learning to walk and picked up a shovel. "Back to work", she thought with a smile.
It's a beautiful day in the park.

Birthday Girl

Today is Zoe's first birthday. She spent the day with her Nanas who took her to the zoo while Mommy & Daddy went to work. Hooray for Nanas! It was a cool, breezy but sunny day, and at the end of the day, no one could decide who wore out who, but truth was, everyone was worn out.
It was reported back that the Oakland Zoo is a really beautiful place, with a natural landscape, and generous, natural habitats. Zoe was most impressed by the elephants.
I can hardly believe that it's been a whole year since she was a writhing, screaming bundle of flesh that I couldn't figure out what to do with. We were still in shock after the trauma of her emergency delivery. She has grown so quickly! And I have grown around her.

Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk

The fun is this way!

Zoe and Mommy get dizzy together on the carousel

Who doesn't love the boardwalk?!

The pesi ride was a little lame, especially after the thrill of going back in time on the Cave Train.
