Children's Playground

We have been loving The Winter Of Sunshine! And here is another example of a sunny weekend spent doing sunny-day things, like going to GGP and riding down the concrete slide. This slide isn't for the faint of heart! Man, some days I wish my kids had a pair of Toughskins...

Removal

It's okay! Just Nana removing Zoe's stitches. The anticipation is always worse than the procedure. Poor Nana, I don't think she could've survived any more wails!

The real Happiest Place on Earth

Note to self: place this memory deep inside yourself, and always remember these, most happiest of moments. A warm, February day, a wide sunny beach, a late afternoon, and squeals of delight, giggles and bubbles in the sand.

February? Yes!

We couldn't have ordered more beautiful weather for our vacation week to southern California. Honestly, the vacation week was a bit of a surprise until just a few weeks before. We decided to drive to Long Beach, and while I took a weekend in Las Vegas for a conference, the kids hung out with Daddy and Nana & Nene. Then when I returned to LB, the kids and I had a blast visiting some of Mommy's old friends, visiting our favorite parks, beaches and even Disneyland. Gorgeous weather allowed for romps in the ocean, and even a slight suntan.
Here are the kids playing at one of my favorites in the world. Diver's Cove in Laguna beach. I played here many many times as a child, and it makes me so happy that kids love it just as much as I did. We all look forward to visiting this pristine, turquoise cove on a sunny day.

FrankenZoe

While The Mommy is away in Las Vegas at a conference, Zoe had an accident.
She fell on a trailer hitch with her face. Nana & Nene did their best to keep her calm, stop the bleeding, and then headed home to collect Daddy before setting out for stitches. Zoe was a trooper, and after many hours of waiting, finally was stitched up. This would be Zoe's second set in her short 5 years. Quit hitting hard things with your face, Kitten! The worst part? Mommy came out of class to find 12 missed calls with the text, "Call now! Medical emergency!"

Valentine's Day, Part 2

After picking Julian up from his school party, we went to Zoe's school to join the party there. The kids had quit work for the day, and some moms brought treats to share as the kids ran around stuffing valentines into each other's bags. We helped the non readers match their valentines to the correct bags while music played to our chaotic dance around the little room. Afterward, the children sat and looked through their bags of love, at the carefully crafted cards full of color and hand written notes. Even Ninja, Nick's dog joined in on the party.

Valentine's Day, Part 1

Time to drop Julian off a school for his class valentine party. He is armed with his sack full of handmade valentines to share with his friends. Of course, Kristi has planned a beautiful celebration with delicately set table. Julian is so excited he skips all the way to school.

Party Dress

Zoe went to Truman's birthday party today. We bought a lovely party dress for the occasion. On the way home, we stopped for a pretty little picture.

Chinese New Year Parade

New year is a tough time to enjoy a parade. Especially around here. February is a notoriously rainy month for us. So who wants to go into the City, and sit on the sidewalk for a couple of hours- with young children? Not me. The pull of dragons, lions, lights and firecrackers was too much for us this year though, and since it has been especially dry, we went to see the big parade. What fun! The kids were so excited. We bundled up and planted ourselves on a good curb, right in front of the action and waited with anticipation for the show to start. As the sun set and the light faded, we watched dancers, marchers, politicians and children wave as they rode in cars, walked on foot and some on stilts or beneath costumes. Dozen footed dragons wound through the street, undulating, and spitting sparks. Firecrackers smoked and popped and threw red confetti into the air and on the street. Lions flirted with the crowd, dancing and batting their huge eyelashes, lunging at the crowd, and teasing the giggling, waiting children. Everyone wanted the lions to come and play with them. It was a feast for the senses as incense wafted through the air, the sky slowly dimmed and music from speakers and from marching bands paraded in front of us. The whole scene crackled with sounds and lights.
When our buns grew too cold, we decided to walk back to our car down a side street. Waiting there was the grand finale- a lighted dragon as long a whole city block, an army of sneakered men waited beside to take their turn to run and dive along Market Street at the end of the parade. Meanwhile, they stood for pictures as passers by marveled at the sight of such a beast.

Mess of Happiness

We make valentines every year, sometimes we buy, sometimes we glue.
This year though, Zoe's teacher mandated well in advance that valentines should be cleverly made by hand, and to plan ahead. While some kids showed up with homemade monoprints, and others with 3d fairies, most of them had some sort of beautiful, scribbled, pasted, colorful 2 dimensional expression of love. They were wonderful to behold.
As for us, we spend many afternoons with the ol' Yes! paste and scissors, stamps and stickers, and the bag of pink and red themed papers that I have collected over many years. And we created the best Mess of Happiness ever.
